摘　　要：Although translation has played a prominent role in human life,it is ar gued that the emer gence of English as a Lingua Franca(ELF)has we akened translation’s status.In this essay,I will argue that ELF has diminished the need for translation in t erms of human c ommunication,yet it is no threat for translation in some o ther aspects such as writ ten literature.In order to demonstrate this argument,I will firs t analyse the spread of ELF.Then I will examine the benefits of ELF as a c ommunication tool and the inna te weaknesses of translation.Finally,the need for translation in certain areas will be looked at.
