摘　　要：Investigating the development of American historiography, theauthor holds that four major trends of thought have appeared suc-cessively in this century, namely, the progressive, the neo-conser-vative, the new-left and the new American. Meanwhile, alongwith the influence of social sciences on American historiography,historical studies are more and more focusing on specific topics.The impact of aseial sciences and the fragmentation of topics arelowering the macro-comprehensiveness of the studies. This is thereason why few great works of world-wide significance on Ameri-can history have ever been published in the 20th century.
