摘　　要：Society establishes codes we must live by as members of that society.Some of these codes are recorded in established laws, others are not; most all are learned by members of that society.Culture is the sum of these learned behaviour codes.It seems intuitive that elements of codified culture may be studied and learned by other's that are not members of the target society.Problems arise when culturally normal behaviour patterns or cultural artefacts are Iconized in language.Icons from the target society (S1) are likely to be simply re-codified by substituting existing Icons from the inquiring society (S2).Meaning is easily lost without considering carefully the ontological make-up of S1 and S2, noting and comparing the differences,and clearly teaching them.I hope to demonstrate that an examination of culture without adequate consideration and understanding of ontology is doomed and will actually interfere with some attempts to learn or teach language or culture.At the very least, I hope to give you a new perspective to consider.
